What is TESL Nova Scotia?

TESL Nova Scotia is an association of people concerned with the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) in Nova Scotia. Membership is open to anyone interested in TESL. Regular meetings, a newsletter, the TESL Canada Journal and an annual conference provide opportunities for professional development and the sharing of ideas and concerns.

TESL Nova Scotia is the Nova Scotia provincial TESL association represented on the TESL Canada Board, and all members in good standing of TESL NS are also members of TESL Canada. TESL Nova Scotia elects a TESL NS Executive officer to represent TESL NS on the TESL Canada Board.

Canadian residents who are interested in applying for TESL membership must join through their province/territory, not directly through TESL Canada. TESL Canada communicates periodically with members by email.

As an organization, TESL Nova Scotia:

Forms professional links with other regional associations and individuals involved or interested in ESL teaching, and with the TESL Canada Federation, the national organization which links the various provincial bodies.
Supports public policies and programmes promoting second language teaching and learning, alerts the provincial and federal governments to the needs of ESL students and teachers, and encourages the establishment of appropriate administrative structures to meet these needs.
Fosters scholarship, research, and professional development among teachers, administrators, and others involved in ESL in Nova Scotia.
Promotes public awareness of ESL and multicultural issues in order to foster intercultural understanding.
Supports second language learners in Nova Scotia through donation of ESL materials to provincial libraries.

TESL NS tries to organize professional development opportunites throughout the year. Speakers focus on aspects of language learning theory or teaching methodology, and members share ideas and experiences. A regular newsletter keeps members in touch with local activities and developments in ESL. An annual conference enables TESL Nova Scotia members to learn from and share information with distinguished local, national, and international specialists in the field of English language teaching. In addition, members will receive a TESL Canada membership along with the TESL Canada Journal, published twice yearly.

As an ESL professional or someone interested in ESL in Nova Scotia, we welcome you to join TESL Nova Scotia or to renew your current membership.

About Membership

Membership runs from November 1 until October 31. All memberships expire October 31.
The regular membership fee is $45.00
Full-time student membership is $35.00. Part-time graduate students in Education can also benefit from student membership. Students currently enrolled in TESL Canada recognized teacher training programs may also join at the student rate. For a list of these programs, check the TESL Canada website.
Membership is $35.00 for volunteer teachers of ESL who are currently volunteering.
As a member of TESL NS, you are also a member of TESL Canada and benefit from membership rates at TESL Canada events.
Communication between TESL NS and members is by email. TESL Canada also communicates with members by email. If you don't use email, please contact us and we will make other arrangements for you.
Please make your cheque payable, in Canadian funds, to TESL Nova Scotia and mail it to us with the application form (available below).
